The fact that she was accepted at a highly competitive university also attests to her intellectual and academic abilities.  The conflict lies between what she wants to do and her feelings of responsibilities to her family. Given her fathers accident and subsequent inability to practice law, she feels  she should help the family. Mitchell and Krumboltz suggest there are four factors in the process of career development: 1. Genetic endowments and special abilities: each person has a  range of ability that may be inherited or gained through practice. We need to discover and develop our abilities (Brotherton, 2005). Amelia is a gifted student who is especially strong  in math and science, which could be both inherited from her physician-father and obtained through activities and discussions at home. 2. Environmental conditions and events: what is happening around an  individual has an effect on discovering abilities and our career preferences (Brotherton, 2005). The home environment changed dramatically when her father had an accident which resulted in a wheelchair and  losing his career. 3. Learning Experiences: our sense of self is affected by our learning experiences and our sense of the world (Brotherton, 2005). Amelias sense of self is one  that is based on perceived responsibilities, which, in turn, stem from family love and closeness. Beyond that, Amelia has had many associative learning experiences through her two professional parents. 4.  Task Approach Skills: these are the skills an individual uses in approaching life, such as how an individual solves problems, how they accomplish daily tasks, how well they understand emotions  and their own cognitive thought processes (Brotherton, 2005).
