    course, authors do not agree on the definition of the concept and it is important to point out that the idea of codependency is controversial. It is also something that  emanated from the greedy, Alcoholics Anonymous movement that rendered every request as a reason to say "no" and every action by another as characteristic of some disorder. In other words,  such movements that embrace co-dependency and concepts such as that would paint a rosy world where every nasty word is verbal abuse and every request is impinging on ones freedoms.  The concept is not realistic. Yet, there is a school of thought that renders the movement something sorely needed in a cruel world. Alcoholism, drug addiction and other uncontrolled behaviors  are commonplace in society. From indulging in too much food to becoming addicted to shopping, the world does appear to be a place where people focus too much on a  particular desire. They have little self control. Such behaviors spill over into relationships, particularly those close ones and the spouses and lovers of those who drink a little bit too  much, or smoke marijuana too often become what some therapists call codependent. As part of the addicts overall problem, the spouse is affected too and certain behaviors are characteristic of  this problem. Examples are seen in care taking behavior, making excuses and enabling the person in trouble to continue. Effectively, the codependent is just as sick as the person with  the addiction. They may phone the addicts place of employment when he or she has a hangover, or take care of them when they are sick due to their untoward  behaviors. For those in the psychology business who recognize codependency as a viable designation--and again, many therapists do not--there are particular methods of getting better.
