    instructed that toleration is the key to success regarding racial discrimination and violent racism. In Lillian Smiths book we find an interesting example of a society, a society from the  1920s, that may tolerate, to some extent, but nonetheless a society that does not care. In the following paper we examine Smiths theme of caring as an incredibly important tool  for ending ignorance and racial discrimination. Caring As mentioned, we are often told to tolerate different people. However, toleration is not the key to success. Tolerating something means that  we do not necessarily care for it, nor are we concerned with what happens to the thing being tolerated. Toleration, in short, is actually nothing but a negative perspective that  means we are hiding our true feelings. In Smiths book her characters call for caring, not toleration. We note how characters are tolerating the existence of different races in  the very beginning of Smiths book. And, in that aspect of toleration we see that the people do not really care about the others, nor do they actually care about  one another. They are merely using and tolerating one another. We present a brief excerpt from the first page of Smiths novel and then illustrate how the people do not  care, only tolerate: "She stood at the gate, waiting; behind her the swamp, in front of her Colored town, beyond it, all Maxwell. Tall and slim and white in the  dusk, the girl stood there, hands on the picket gate. "Thats Nonnie Anderson," they would tell you, "Thats one of the Anderson niggers. Been to college. Yeah! Whole family been  to college! All right niggers though, even if they have. Had a good mother who raised her children to work hard and know their place. Anderson niggers alright. Good as
