While Carnival is very large and provides a vast array of offerings for the public, it has had its share of ups and downs. Of course, any business does have
problems and often faces lawsuits. A recent example is that when an 89-year-old passenger became ill, rather than allowing him to stay on, they asked him to leave at the
next stop on the itinerary ("Carnival Cruise Lines to sick passenger: Get off our ship," 2008). This of course was something that may seem prudent. Carnival claims that they were
afraid they would not be able to treat him on the ship if his condition worsened ("Carnival Cruise Lines to sick passenger: Get off our ship," 2008). It is a
reasonable statement, but abandoning a paying guest in a different country is rather alarming. Carnival could have perhaps done more to help such as provided this man with rapid transportation
back to his home country. In any event, the ships are marketed as fun vacations and for the most part that is what most guests experience. Occasionally, there are problems
on ships, but by and large, most people have a wonderful vacation experience. In the industry, there are positive and negative influences. Carnival for example is the number one player
in the market, but the business in general is threatened by a struggling economy as well as by the fact that most people do not take cruises. This may be
a detriment but it also opens up opportunities for Carnival. The economy coupled with the fact that cruises are not the number one vacation choice may be detrimental to future
