with us. These days, the computers are more than word processors or spreadsheet calculators -- thanks to artificial intelligence-based computer programs called "expert systems" computers can analyze data and  based on that analysis, come up with conclusions to problems or situations. The theory behind such systems is simple -- the system is little more than a storage device  for the knowledge of one or more human experts and a specific field. When the user presents the expert system with a problem pertaining to that field, the system  can than use its stored knowledge to figure out and solve the problem. In this paper, we will examine the real-world use  of expert systems by analyzing five case studies. These studies examine expert systems in a variety of industries and determine how the systems operated to help the user solve  a problem or correct a situation. Determining structural cracks In the field of civil engineering, few things can be more frustrating than  trying to diagnose the cause of structural cracks in stone buildings. Such a task is typically assigned to an accomplished by specialist engineers (Rotshtein, 2001). That is, at least  until researchers at Vinnitsa State Technical University in the Ukraine and the Jerusalem College of Technology in Israel combined forces to develop a fuzzy expert systems that could diagnose the  cause of these cracks (Rotshtein, 2001). In order to do this, expert knowledge helped build a hierarchical fuzzy logic evidence tree, consisting  of 118 terms that represent 42 different features (Rotshtein, 2001). The these features would be familiar to specialists engineers -- and include construction type of building as well as cracked
