    (Erickson & Hart, 1998). It has been made well known through the use of public service announcements and stories from famous people who have been abused. Famous abusers have  been Ike Turner and O.J. Simpson and even Liza Minelli. Abuse knows no ethnic, racial or financial boundaries. It is something that is a problem in society today. Domestic violence  is something thought of as being proliferated against women, but it can occur against men in both homosexual and heterosexual relationships (Erickson& Hart, 1998). While domestic violence can be proliferated  against men, about 95% of reported domestic abuse cases do involve women (Hyman, Schillinger, & Lo, 1995 as cited in Erickson et al., 1998). Domestic violence is a major public  health concern and it has been reported that $44 million (1998, 142) in medical costs are attributed to physical abuse proliferated against females. Therefore, it is a significant  public health issue (1998). The American Medical Association (AMA) (Easley, 1996 as cited in Erickson et al., 1998) estimated that more than 4 million women had been beaten  by their partners in 1995 and it was further noted that approximately one in four women will be beaten by a man in her lifetime (1998). While there are some  cases of abuse against men, for the most part, the women are the partners at risk. There are some studies which contradict the findings that women are generally the victims.  Today, domestic violence or gender violence does not always involve a stereotypical couple. Sometimes a wife hits a husband. Sometimes a child hits the parents. In situations where  several generations live in one household, there is violence proliferated against the elderly, and some members of the family take out their grief on pets.
