    employees was always particularly acute in the summer and Reed dreaded the constant process of hiring personnel, as this base pay job experienced a large turnover. The problem in this  case study is to provide suggestions as to how Reed can make summer replacement hires work out more successfully than in the past. The problem in this situation is that  the company in question, and Reed in particular, have to go through the process of hiring personnel for entry level positions over and over again, with the end result being  that there is still no reliable pool of replacement personnel for vacationing or sick employees. The literature on this subject suggests possible solutions. Hiring personnel can be a time-consuming  and costly process. Reed has to place ads for the positions, interview candidates, select the people to hire, and fill out all necessary paperwork. Furthermore, these employees have to be  added to the company payroll, which means increases in the companys payroll expenses. If the new employee then does not work out, the whole process must be repeated almost immediately.  It is a time-consuming and costly procedure, in and of itself. The cost involved would be better spent on establishing a working relationship with a good temporary employment agency. The  temp agency would handle the chore of establishing a reliable temporary employment pool specifically tailored to meet the needs of Blue Grocery. When one thinks of the word "temp"  and agency, they usually think of short-term clerical help. However, while clerical workers still account for the largest segment of this employment group (21 percent), the temporary employment industry provides  workers for practically every other segment of the business world -- including temp CEOs and other professionals (Siskos and Stevenson, 2003).
