    what counseling is about and/or how they will organize the sessions. In this case, the counselor took a minute to establish at least a little rapport between herself and the  client. Non-threatening questions, like asking if the client found her way to the office okay suggests concern and interest on the counselors part. The counselor gave the client time to  respond to an unimportant question, a chance to say something. The second question is also non-threatening - is this your first counseling session? Again, rapport-building in an easy tone.  This evaluator thinks the next question about how the client feels so far is just plain silly. The dialog at this point has taken 10 seconds. However, the counselor then  provides a very brief introduction about the counseling sessions, which can put the clients mind at ease because she knows what will happen. There is a time limit in terms  of duration but that duration can be extended. There is an end but if the client feels more is needed, that option is open. This offers the client security. For  the most part, the counselor is using reflective listening, sometimes referred to as reflective responding (Fisher, n.d.). This approach comes from Carl Rogers Client-Centered therapy (Fisher, n.d.; PsyWeb, 2005).  In client-centered therapy, the client is placed at the center and is the focus of therapy, not the therapist and not the process (Heffner, 2004). Additionally, the client-centered therapist has  no preconceptions and makes no judgments (Heffner, 2004). The therapist is involved in mutual self-disclosure (Heffner, 2004). The approach is one of reflection, a type of paraphrasing (Heffner, 2004). While,  thus far, the therapist in this case study has not made any self-disclosures, she definitely focuses on the client.
