    1986, its hard to believe that something similar couldnt happen today. Paul Cronan worked for New England Telephone starting in 1973. In 1985, he developed symptoms of AIDS related complex  (ARC) and began missing work due to illness. When Cronan asked for a day off to see a doctor for the third time in a few months, his supervisor, Charles  OBrien, refused to let him go unless Cronan told him what the problem was. Cronan, fearing for his job unless he complied, told OBrien that he was being treated for  ARC, but that he did not have AIDS. He further begged OBrien not to tell anyone else. OBrien promised complete confidentiality. OBrien, however, told his boss, Paul Cloran, about Cronans  condition, and Cloran told his supervisors. (OBrien later claimed that Cloran told him to find out what Cronans condition was.) The day following Cronans departure to see the doctor he  was told to report to the company doctor; he told the doctor about his ARC. The doctor said that he was suffering from AIDS-anxiety and recommended he see a psychiatrist.  A day or two after that exam, a co-worker called Cronan at home and said she had heard he had AIDS; it was all over the company. Not only that,  but she had overheard other workers making threats to lynch Cronan if he returned to work. He called and asked to be put on medical leave, which was granted. In  June of 1985 he began receiving departmental sickness benefits, and in September of that year he was hospitalized. His status was changed from ARC to AIDS. Cronans health improved by  spring of 1986 and he wanted to go back to work. New England Telephone balked. Cronan sued the company for discrimination based on his health status, and was finally returned
