is the proverbial garage starter story. Yes, Merrick did start the company in his own garage and he borrowed money for the endeavor to boot (Brand, 2004). And as they  say, the rest is history. Although Channel Islands Surfboards is not the biggest company in the industry, it does seem to have an excellent reputation. Merrick, a surfer in his  own right, designed boards for Shawn Thompson early on and later for Kelly Slater (2004). The company, situated in Santa Barbara, California, does promote some up and coming surf boarders  and of course, this is part of the marketing scheme. It is well known that makers of sport product use stars to prompt their product. It is in fact the  number one technique and Channel Island Surfboards does this too. While again, the company does not perhaps sponsor famous people, it is hoped that some of he young people  being sponsored will fare well in the future. It also makes for good customer relations. The people who are sponsored will receive free merchandise perhaps, but it goes a long  way. The surfers will likely purchase other products themselves and their friends will buy at the company too. When strangers see the sponsored surfers on the boards, that is an  advertisement for the company as well. At Channel Islands Surfboards web site there are many surfers featured. One is 36 year old Lisa Anderson ("Channel," 2005). Lisa is sponsored by  several firms, inclusive of Channel Islands (2005). Dylan Graves, a 19 year old, is also sponsored by several companies and is an all around athlete; in addition to surfing, he  enjoys soccer and basketball (2005).
