Charlemagne has been interpreted differently by different writers over the centuries. Those differences in interpretation are apparent even in accounts from his own time. The account by Einhard and the Vita Caroli, for example, differs significantly from that by Notker the Stammerer (Monk of Saint Gall) written for Charlemagne's epileptic great-grandson Charles the Fat.
