    sentencing. Today, several states in fact mandate that mediation take place before a case ever goes to court (Volkert, 2005). This is typical for family law and construction law as  well (Volkert, 2005). Yet, there are cases where mediation is inappropriate, such as cases where domestic violence is involved (Volkert, 2005). Obviously, one would not want to mediate a situation  where there is imminent danger. Still, criminal law has adopted this technique. In fact, nine out of ten cases in the 4th Judicial District are mediated (Huspeni, 2006). That,  in and itself is controversial. Again, one would not want to potentially endanger the general public. At the same time, a student writing on this subject should investigate at least  one case study to see exactly how mediation materializes in the criminal justice system. First, it should be said that there are different types of mediation programs. Mediation may occur  in a formal adjudication instead of formal involvement in the system (University of Houston, 2003). In such cases, mediation provides a deferred adjudication and claims that the youth may have  a clean record if in fact all requirements are honored (University of Houston, 2003). In other words, the disposition of a case is differed so that the young offender will  have time to make amends. Other forms of mediation are found within the prisons themselves and these programs are considered part of the treatment effort (University of Houston, 2003). Some  of these are similar to twelve step programs in their design (University of Houston, 2003). Drug court is an example of a program within the court system that serves as  a tool to help addicts who would otherwise be imprisoned. In examining the problem, a case involving a juvenile concerns a boy named Chris Paul. II. Case
