for a significant shift in city development. Indeed, urban sprawl has created serious problems for contemporary cities to such a degree that developers are clamoring to reconfigure old standards  with regard to outgrowth. When the student considers how the sidewalk might be a path that can be made into a place rather than just a space, it is  important to realize the myriad components that ultimately dictate the type of streets that exist in todays communities. II. REDEFINING URBAN FABRIC There is much to be said for  the manner by which a citys streets are laid out with regard to certain important social implications. For example, Eran Ben-Joseph and Michael Southworths Streets and the Shaping of  Towns and Cities clearly illustrates just how much thought must be put into a citys planning in order to address the following issues: * how street layouts shape the  character of a community * how various street patterns can have dramatically different effects * how streets have changed due to the growth of technology * how  a standard system can help communities grow in a rational manner (Streets and the Shaping of Towns and Cities). The student will  want to discuss the influence of early Roman streets as they have impacted subsequent city development, as well as the major modifications that have taken place throughout the decades.  One issue within the realm of contemporary society is the trend toward smaller, less spatial streets as a means by which to discourage the overwhelming space hogs that automobiles have  become. This move away from sprawling pathways clearly indicates the desire to reach back in time and bring forward the quaintness and simplicity so inherently associated with older cities.
