Demographics, defined as "the study of the characteristics of human populations" (Rothenbuler 2002, PG) is concerned primarily with such things as census numbers, male to female ratios, birth and death  numbers as well as the population moving into and out of the demographic area being defined. In recent years more specific information has been added as well to many demographic  studies and it has now become common practice to break down these population figures even further with very detailed information. Such things as income that is then separated into  ratios of people within certain industries is commonly an important factor as are the age groups and ratios within the age groups. Education is oftentimes recorded as well, determining what  the educational level of various populations is and the percentage of those who are college graduates even considering what type of degrees and what level those degrees are. Demographics information  is used for many purposes. Through the use of demographics it can be determined if a certain type of customer base is in that locale  in sufficient numbers to support a new business, or demographics can be used to determine whether there are already too many of that type of business already established for the  area (Rothenbuler 2002) CLEVELAND, OHIO The population for the Cleveland, Ohio area according to figures from the year 2000 is at a little over 478,400 people.
