softly, not looking at other individuals and so forth. Those with better concepts of self will generally possess better communication styles and be more forthcoming and outgoing. While this seems  to be rather obvious, several studies provide support and specific details in this regard. For example, Kirtley & Weaver (1999) conclude that communication style has been conceptualized as a way  in which individuals perceive themselves in terms of how they interact with other people. Authors note that three primary communication styles had been examined as a function of  gender role self perception and the conclusions are consistent with expectations (1999). Independent of sex, findings also suggest that communal respondents prefer an expressive communication style but agentic respondents prefer  a dominant, assertive one (1999). Thus, this study demonstrates that while gender may be a factor in predicting communication style, there are many other things that affect communication abilities.  While general conclusions have been drawn, gender based differences culminated in the fact that females reported a socially oriented style but males took a more direct, results oriented approach (1999).  Another study suggests that lonely people tend to be socially unresponsive as well as inattentive (Ponzetti, 1990). In delving into this particular look at loneliness, much does have  to do with the fact that individuals who are lonely have poor self perceptions. Lonely students for example tend to be more self-conscious and less aware of or  concerned about their partners in respect to social encounters (Sloan & Solano, 1984 as cited in Ponzetti, 1990). This is important as self-consciousness may be related to a detrimental self  perception. Such individuals are also more anxious and apprehensive in respect to social situations and they also lack confidence (1990). These students also lack communication skills like empathy and warmth
