their lives. Someone could have a particularly bad time at a party and feel isolated, where another perceives most of the other participants as friendly. Coming from a negative perspective,  one might feel alienated, but a friendly person will meet others of like mind and be able to communicate and have a good time. The party may be the same  and perhaps the individuals are similar in terms of age, appearance and professional associations. Yet, their personal perceptions in respect to people are significantly different. What is perception anyway and  why is it important? Perception is "the extraction and use of information about ones environment...and ones own body" (Honderich, 1995, p.652). Yet, of course, perceptions are different from  person to person. The external senses like hearing, seeing, touching smelling and tasting overlap to an extent, but are distinguished by the kind of information they convey (1995). While many  things are perceived similarly, such as what is conveyed by a film or political message, perception does vary from person to person. It is why some individuals will look at  fashion models and have very different reactions. One will think she is pretty and the other will think her characteristics are rather plain. Much has to do with perception as  well as human nature. While perception is an important psychological component, it is not a disorganized system. In fact, perception is often well organized. Perceptual organization is a collective  term that is utilized as a diverse set of processes and contributes to the emergence of order in respect to visual input (Shimon, 1995). It may also be used to  denote input from any of the other senses.
