JLHoles.rtf "Comparison between The Wizard of Oz by Baum and Holes by Sachar" Research Compiled for Enterprises Inc  By January 2013 To Use This Report Correctly, Please   It is evident from the fact that both Baums The Wizard of Oz and Sachars Holes are novels of  a similar genre - namely, modern fantasy - that there may well be similarities of character, plot and form between the two. However, at first glance this might appear not  to be the case, since there are significant differences in the content of the two narratives.  For example, Holes is very much a contemporary story, in that present-day adolescents will find it easy to identify  with the central character, Stanley. He is the kind of individual who is constantly at the centre of trouble, even though this may not be entirely his own fault, and  is also something of a loner, not being part of the popular set at his school. These themes with regard to the definition of a main character are fairly common  to many novels written for teenagers, and allow the reader to envisage the character as either someone who is akin to themselves, or who reminds them of someone whom they  know in real life. Consequently, the writer immediately creates some degree of affinity between the reader and the narrative, which lends it credibility and a sense of familiarity.
