a dream. He is a man who has been told that the American dream is a reality, offered to everyone. What he does not know is that this American dream  is not as easy to possess as he had thought. He did not understand that one needed to have skills and determination, not just looks and a smile. Willy was  essentially a superficial man who did not understand what it took to be a great success, perhaps rising in his position to that of management, or even to that of  an incredibly successful salesman/employee. His character was weak, and his intelligence was lacking. Willy was also constantly blaming others, a perspective that becomes very real when we truly examine  the imaginations of Willy. Willys old boss was Frank Wagner. Willy likes to imagine that Jack is still his boss, and that if he were, Willy would not be in  the position he is currently in. He feels that his old manager would have given him a promotion. Now, in all honesty, we do not know that Frank would have  promoted Willy at all. We do not have anything to tell us that Willy is a more than adequate salesman or employee. For all we know Frank would have fired  him long ago, or at the very least, not promoted him. In this we see Willy blaming his new boss for his position. He puts the blame of his own  failure as an employee onto the shoulders of his new boss. And, the truth is that Willy is just not a very good salesman, though he once may have been.  It becomes clear that Willy blames others for his position in life.
