    a time of unique bonding in this country which can be seen in everything from flags proudly displayed to monies given to charities to the combined efforts of people all  over this nation to help the victims of the terrorist attacks. In light of this major event, it is interesting to examine the works of two political scientists who  claim the American public is disconnected from the political process overall. In their books, both Volgy and Putnam assert that the people in this country are no longer tied  closely to their society and to the politicians as well. This is amid an environment of mistrust toward the government in general. While these two authors echo  many of the same beliefs, they have differences as well. It is important to understand their points of view in order to better understand the climate of the country  in terms of political participation. Furthermore, both agree that an understanding of the current situation is necessary in order to make any changes for the future. Thomas  Volgy - Politics in the Trenches Essentially, Volgy sets out to remind the American public that despite the obvious exceptions, politicians in  general are a group of hardworking and honest people with our good in mind. The focus of Volgys book is local government since it is the closest level of  politics to the people and since it offers the opportunity for people to relate toward the political figures and the democratic process.  He opens this book with the story of how and why his parents came to this country, outlining their hardships and struggles: We learned quickly that there would be
