Dell Computer  is the #1 direct-sale computer company in the world (Hoovers, 2002). The companys founder initiated an innovative approach to selling computers - directly to the user, skipping all the middlemen  in sales (Hoovers, 2002). Dell also builds a variety of products ranging from laptops/notebooks to desktops, workstations, network servers and storage systems (Hoovers, 2002). Gateway, Inc. is also a direct-sales  company, in fact, it is the #2 direct sales vendor in the industry. It builds and sells portable PCs, i.e., notebooks, desktops, and network servers (Hoovers, 2002). Gateways customer based  includes businesses, individuals and other agencies (Hoovers, 2002). Dell Computer and Compaq Computer have been jockeying back and forth for the #1 position as PC vendor in the United  States. For the purpose of this paper, comparing any type of hardware from three companies, a laptop computer was selected. An effort was made to select models that were  closest in price.
