Complexity Compression in an Outpatient Pain Mgmt. Clinic

    Number of Pages: 7

    Summary of the research paper:

A 7 page research paper that offer guidance to a student in formulating the first several chapters of a research study proposal that deals with the emergent phenomenon of complexity compression. The purpose of this study project is to conduct a literature review and provide a thorough synthesis of available literature on this topic, with a particular focus that offers ways in which the stress and unworkable nature of complexity compression can be ameliorated. Complexity compression is defined as the expectation that nurses will "assume additional, unplanned responsibilities while simultaneously conducting their multiple responsibilities in a condensed time frame" (MNA, 2008). Bibliography lists 3 sources.

accomplished prior to the writing of even one prescription. These two RNs typically process roughly 100 requests within an 8 hour shift. Charts are retrieved by a sole unit secretary,  who responds to numerous and sundry external portals of access: phone lines from doctors (2 physicians are on duty per shift; fax line from the pharmacy; emails from patients; and  a phone line from the pharmacy. There are also patients returning phone calls, questions from co-workers and physicians signing charts, asking questions and requesting results. This situation describes a typical  day at the hospital-based outpatient pain management clinic that will provide the setting for this investigation into an emergent phenomenon that has been termed "complexity compression" by the Minnesota Nurses  Association (MNA)(MNA, 2008). Purpose of the project The purpose of this study project is to conduct a literature review and provide a thorough synthesis of available literature on this  topic, with a particular focus that offers ways in which the stress and unworkable nature of complexity compression can be ameliorated. Setting The writer/tutor recommends describing the outpatient  pain clinic briefly in this section, where it is located, the basic demographics of its clientele, as well as any other pertinent data that the student/researcher feels is appropriate.  Background/history A report from the Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA) indicates that roughly 40 percent of the average workday for registered nurse (RN) is devoted to "meeting the ever-increasing demands of  the systems of health care delivery in which nurses are employed" (MNA, 2008). The demands placed on nurses include requiring that they fill-out documentation; learn new "and seemingly ever-changing  procedures"; and adapt to each change in management and administration (MNA, 2008). This, of course, means that 40 percent of the nurses workday is not spent caring for patients.
