However, the situation between Tans protagonist and her mother is particularly severe because of the added expectations that derive from the mothers  Chinese background, which conflicts with the cultural ideals of the American-born daughter. However, before examining Tans narrative in detail, it is instructive to look at the period in which it  is set, the 1950s. It was during this period that American society was very concerned with redefining the role of women.
