In contrast to racial divisions for  example, ethnicity is really a complex concept that has socio-cultural as well as biological features (Anand, 1999). Also, because of this, the interpretation of the ethnicity construct is not  easy, and so its definition is usually unique to particularly circumstances (1999). Conducting ethnicity research requires awareness of differences in respect to the concepts of ethnicity and race, as well  as the acknowledgement of the complexity of the ethnicity construct (1999). In order to compare and contrast ethnicity with nationalism and globalization, one definition should be found. Fishman (1989 as  cited in Galguera, 1998) claims that the essential elements of ethnicity are in fact its content as well as its origin or roots. Also, its views of ones own and  others ethnicity becomes important. Thus, race and class appear to be included within the ethnicity paradigm (1998). Race comes from a definition of group membership and this goes mostly to  biological, social and historical geneses (1998). Class arises from an emphasis in respect to membership based on the groups behaviors, as well as their beliefs and values (Fishman, 1989 as  cited in Galguera, 1998). Fishman further sees language as symbolic of and relevant to ethnicity, particularly when ethnic boundaries are drawn (Galguera,  1998). Group memberships in general including the saliency of ethnicity and language, seems to fluctuate mostly as a result of historical, social, and political variables (Turner, 1991 as cited in  Galguera, 1998).
