    Basically, when the manager spoke, the employees listened. In addition, the employees followed managements directives with no questions asked, even if those directives made absolutely no sense.  Times have now changed. Management more and more is realizing that employees are no longer mere cogs in the corporate machinery, but rather,  an integral part of a companys success. As a result, employees are treated more like resources -- human resources -- meaning managers are working hard to employee better communications  between their staff and themselves. Communications in modern management has been especially important in these days of layoffs and cutbacks. Management  has learned, the hard way, that keeping employees in the dark about what the status of the firm is tends to lower morale, which in the end, lowers productivity.  As a result, todays corporate manager is more open with his/her employees, meaning that todays corporate manager must also be a good communicator with his/her staff. The manager who  knows how to communicate well with employees will be able to count on a workforce that is productive and loyal, providing the company with a valuable competitive advantage in todays  global marketplace. The Importance of Good Communications It has been said that effective communications provides the foundation for success in any organization  -- some experts even assert that there is no such thing as "too much communication" (McNamara, 2002). Even as far back as  1969, experts and consultants were informing managers about the benefits of good communication with their employees. Writer James Cribbing for example, noted that the managers effectiveness is not so much
