unwittingly compromises the integrity of women. Faludi admits that most often this is done through language, innuendo, semantics and other subtle means which have simply slipped into the consciousness  of both men and women in this country and are expressed without the knowledge that harm is being done. In other words, people have been socialized and raised into talking  and acting certain ways that may in fact be derogatory toward women or may represent and unequal view of women and men and yet because it is subtle of something  they grew up with, they may be unaware of the repercussions of their words and actions. Faludis book is extensive  and represents an enormous amount of work and research in order to put together this analysis. Faludi obviously makes no accusations which she cannot thoroughly back-up and she does  so time after time with many poignant examples. In terms of life today, it is interesting to note the ways  in which the womens movement has both succeeded and failed. Faludi discusses these issues as well. There are many ways in which there has been a limit to  progress because of the biased portrayal of women by the media and society at large. In this regard, this book is  groundbreaking in that it will hopefully illuminate the ways in which people are influenced by the media and will hopefully learn to think through their words and actions to see  what influences - both positive and negative - show through.
