There are several commonalties, however, which are found in each which determine effective verses ineffective counseling.  These commonalties are particularly interesting in the multicultural world of today. Indeed, there are a number of cultural variables which affect the counseling environment. Many aspects of  counseling which are taken for granted with the mainstream predominantly white population become more complex when multicultural issues are introduced. Counseling techniques can become particularly complex in the case  of traditional cultures and cultures which have derived distinctive differences in communicating and relating with members of their own cultural group in particular. Not only does dealing with such  clients become complicated on the basis of their traditional beliefs, it can become complicated due to these individuals lack of access to counseling and health care and their high propensities  for certain behavioral and medical problems which would automatically necessitate counseling among the general population. Counseling might be shunned by more traditional cultures, however, or by cultures who are
