Nevertheless, the necessity for substance abuse counselors in todays  society grows as does the incidence of alcohol and drug abuse especially in the adolescent populations. In addition to educational requirements, counselors must be skilled in many aspects of treatment  and therapies including individual, group and family therapies as well as many techniques which include motivational therapy, relapse prevention, the Matrix-Model, supportive-expressive therapy, behavioral therapies and most recently recreational therapeutic  programs in addition other external support programs such as the well proven 12-step programs introduced by Alcoholic Anonymous. Substance Abuse Treatments and Therapies  The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is funded and a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and provide  support, funding, research and information regarding therapies used for the treatment of those patients with alcohol or substance abuse. Within the treatment regimens for substance abuse therapies can include those  which are behavioral based which include counseling, psychotherapy, support groups, or family therapy and often a combination of all the types of individual or group counseling as well as treatment  with medications which offer help in suppressing the craving and withdrawal symptoms associated with blocking the effects of the drugs or alcohol (Newsday; NIDA, Drug Addiction Treatment Methods). Historically,  counselors, researchers and physicians have found that "in general the more treatment given, the better the results" in relation to the types and length of therapies needed. In addition, it  has also been found that many patients may also require additional support in regards to meeting their general health and welfare needs and in the case of drug or heroin
