    and to secure the freedoms of Americans indefinitely. And still, nothing of such importance could go without strong debate over  philosophical issues and the Constitution was no different in that regard. While the founding fathers of this country indeed agreed on freedom, the specifics of that freedom as well  as the design of this new government was cause for serious debate. In fact, some even refused to sign the Constitution based on those debates. Yet, in the end,  it is clear that the Constitution has endured the years, endured attacks, and endured opposition. It remains the foundation of this country and the cornerstone of the freedoms we  enjoy as Americans. Why the Constitution Was Created At the time the Constitution was created, the country was indeed in  turmoil and the government was erratic and chaotic (U.S. Constitution: Background and Preamble, 2002). There needed to be a solid, unifying standard (U.S. Constitution: Background and Preamble, 2002).  Government roles needed to be defined and outlined and the centrality of power removed (U.S. Constitution: Background and Preamble, 2002). "In reaction to all of these difficulties, George Washington  called upon each state to appoint a representative and attend a meeting he called the Continental Congress" (U.S. Constitution: Background and Preamble, 2002). Delegates from all the states  went to the Continental Congress and debated the principles which would be outlined in the Constitution (U.S. Constitution: Background and Preamble, 2002). Then, finally on September 17, 1787 the  Constitution was signed (U.S. Constitution: Background and Preamble, 2002). "The U.S. Constitution created a system of checks and balances and
