These innate classifications can represent significant social power, as in the case of beauty, wealth and status, or they can symbolize aspects of society that people  would just as soon forget. To stray from the norm is to deviate from socially acceptable behavior; when one is deviant, he goes against the very essence of what  society has deemed acceptable. One of the easiest things in life is to deviate from what is considered by the masses to be normal; in fact, it is often  considerably more difficult to remain upon a straight and narrow path with the myriad obstacles that appear in daily life. The student can readily argue that deviant behavior has  found its niche within contemporary society, even to the point of infiltrating what is considered to be a standard of normalcy. For example,  the functionalism aspect of fallen sports stars speaks to the element of separation from maintaining cultural and social unity. The world of sports is a complex and interactive world  where the primary purpose for everyones motivation is to win. When this pressure gets to be too great, players begin to manifest their anxiety in significantly negative ways.  Diversity in the type of sport is yet another critical consideration when it comes to functionalism in sports. Members of a team sport are not responsible for maintaining the  entire teams performance, but rather it becomes a group effort to achieve a victory. Individual sports, and those such as baseball that require the efforts of but a single  individual, is quite another story entirely, yet they all still represent the entire sports world as one. II.
