Bryan Babcock for the Paperstore, Inc., March 2001 Introduction The Peaceful Warrior by Dan Hillman has  now been on bookshelves for over two decades. It is a "coming of age tale," but it is a "new age," one of mental awareness and maturity, as college  student Danny has discussions, "journeys," and insights with his guide, Socrates, an old geezer-appearing guy who works in a service station. This discussion will examine the concept of "all  things in moderation," in relationship to this text. Moderation Remember the first time you heard the phrase, "all things in moderation?" And then the person whole told you, as  though it were in some cosmic script, added "including moderation." It was presented to me as though it was very funny; I laughed along politely, and thought to myself,  --what a dumb thing to say. I am sure that I "got it," some time later, but I still didnt think it was too funny. And where I  may have perceived myself as a moderate, it has been brought home to me enough times, that I can no longer pretend it is my personality. In The Peaceful Warrior,  Hillman says, that "moderation is mediocrity, fear and confusion in disguise. It is the warbling compromise that makes no one happy." The first thing that would suggest  Hillmans opposition to moderation - fear and confusion in disguise, would be his choice of the "profession" of the major character, Danny.
