    company; Datavantage has been developed successfully. This may be put down to several factors. The first may have been the way in which the company was founded by Marvin Lader  and his entrepreneurial style, this developed the culture within the company that would allow fir the change in strategy to take place. This laid the foundation for developing the company  from a third party reseller, selling on software developed by others, to taking the chance and acquiring the retail division of LDI. This also brought Chaz on board and also  help the company develop a new direction. This acquisition was the key to the development of the point of sale software. There had been careful consideration of the market  and with no supplier having what Marvin and Chaz saw as a competitive advantage, they developed their own software. This is where se see the competitive advantage of differentiation coming  to the fore. By developing software they were making a major change in strategy, but they were also able to look at what the industry needed. If we look  at the way the strategy developed we can argue that all of the right decisions were made, even if these were not consciously planned. As such this is an example  of an emergent strategy as well as some luck. The first decision that can be seen as key to the success was the basing of the software on the  Windows system. The Microsoft system today is the dominant model, but in 1996 when this product was brought on the market it did not hold the same level of market  share or even cultural acceptance, it was only one of the different choices. The competitors system were still operating on DOS. This created several advantages. The interface was much friendly
