SA143Per.rtf There are many ways to study history and a myriad of techniques are used  to get an idea of what really occurred during an era. Sometimes, original documents are helpful as are writings from the day. To get a glimpse of what a people  were like, or what society was like, historic fiction may be helpful. The knowledge of the author is of course important. Still, it provides a place for an interested reader  to go, which is one that is both interesting and useful at the same time. Other documents include history books, which by and large, contain more credible information. Yet, in  order to glean a sense of what the people were like during a time period and what happened that may not have been reported widely, a multitude of sources would  be helpful. The time of the Persians was an interesting slice of history and one that several authors have focused on for literary  works. Pressfield (1999), for example, takes a look at history around the time of the Persian war. And from his work entitled Gates of Fire, as well as others,  one can get a sense of how the Persians lived at the time. In the novel, Pressfield focuses on the battle of Thermopylae, which was a well known historic battle.  Thus, the author does make sure that he creates an authentic novel based on fact. That is apparent throughout the work and important for anyone studying history. What is also  evident is the quality of daily life during the time of the Persian wars. Pressfield writes: "This is the first time I had ever been to market without a grown-up
