Introduction Trends in design have changed  over the course of the past century. The early part of the twentieth century saw modern design whereas later in the century, postmodernism came forth. While the differences between the  styles were stark, one would have to say that there was by no means an abrupt change in style. Postmodernism emerged slowly but surely, taking over society little by little.  While that may appear to be the case, one could say that postmodernism is the reflection of a confused era that has never really ended, unless one wants to call  it a post-postmodern era. Indeed, some have. There is in fact a new generation of architects rising to prominence, which is characterized by a generation convinced that postmodern pastiche  has grown tired (McKee 230 ). This new breed of designer has embraced multimedia toys, which frequently crosses over into fine arts and performance, and is influenced by  fashion as well as other things (230). While this new world emerges, it pays to look at its roots, and evaluate both modernism and postmodernism. II.  Modern Design Famed architect Phillip Johnson tells students that modernism has debts to past styles, but architecture is changing due to changes in society ("Johnson, Phillip" The Readers PG).  He was once a modernist but soon became a postmodernist (PG). In fact, there are few who still retain a love of the modern. Everything today is postmodern. However,  builders Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner love early California modernism, the kind conveyed by Richard Neutra and Albert Frey (McKee 230). Charles and Ray Eames, for example, were also
