Everyone remembers the old I Love Lucy  episode where the star was not able to make her candies fast enough because the belt was too quick. While that scenario is of course an exaggeration of the problems  one has in conveyor belt design, it brings up the problem of speed. Engineers have to address a variety of challenges when creating conveyor belts with the safety of employees  in mind. Speed is a consideration, but there are other significant factors in creating safe and cost effective conveyor belts. In embarking on conveyor  belt design, a great deal of concerns must be addressed, to ensure the safety of the product. Many accidents occur as a result of either misuse, or flaws in the  belts themselves and so, many concepts need to be considered prior to design or manufacture. First, conveyor belts must be designed with care to avoid accidents. An example of an  accident was reported in JAMA. In May of 1997, it was noted that a 34-year-old paper products worker had died after falling into an operating baler ("Baler," 2001). The worker,  along with another employee, had been loading scrap paper into the baler with the use of a belt conveyor (2001). The material jammed and the co-worker shut down the conveyor  but did not shut down the balers automatic controls (2001). The rest of the story is gruesome, but points out the need for safety in all equipment. For the  most part, the conveyor belts are relatively safe. In this instance, the belt may have or may not have contributed to the ultimate demise of the worker. In any event,
