    have come under attack for the pay and reward packages, where bankers have been criticized for receiving large cash bonuses while the banks themselves are suffering where the payment systems  may not necessary be fully aligned with the long term objectives of the banks (Anonymous, 2009). This indicates an industry where there needs to be a rethinking of reward and  payment strategies in order to ensure that there is an alignment of the long term objectives of the organization and the motivation of the employees, rather than the short term  focus of the employees seen in many banks. The paper will consider a truly international banking organization; Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) had global operations and  has not faced the same difficulties as many more high profile banks, but it has not escaped the problems of the 2008/9 recession (HSBC, 2010). This makes the bank a  good candidate to examine in order to assess the potential for an improved payment and reward system. 1.1 Aims and Objectives  The aim of this paper will be to develop a new payment and reward system that is suitable to be implemented at HSBC that will increase motivation and align the  long term goals of the employees with organizational goals, including the long term performance and survival of the firm as well as the short term profitability. In order to design  and implement an optimal system the following aims will need to be met; * Identification of the current mission, vision and long terms goals of HSBC * Assess the current  strategies and forms of motivation that are present within the HSBC workforce and the employment relationship. * To identify relevant motivation theories that can be applied to the
