    for that matter. Even in non-fiction literature, it can be argued that the implied character, which is the reader, has to be engaged as clearly as the characters in an  epic novel. The one element that can jar a reader out of that fictional dream state is the use of bad, faulty or wooden dialogue. Therefore, arguably, the dialogue between  two characters must be as close to the real thing as possible, making it possible for the reader to connect in some way with the telling of the story.  The following is an example of good dialogue between two characters. Good dialogue will have several distinguishing features. First, not only is  the dialogue understood to be necessary to the scene and to the characters, but it can show the reader what the internal thoughts of the character might be without going  into a great deal of exposition later. "Youre looking at that picture again, Meg."  "I cant help but wonder what kind of mother my Kimi might have been had she lived. Im sorry. I promised that I wouldnt bring up the past."  "Thats okay.
