Whilst recognised for many years in the United States, it is only just becoming widely accepted as a potential problem in the UK.  In this paper we will first consider what is meat by the digital divide, how it may manifest in society, and if this divide is really one that  can be seen as important when we consider the long term implications. In undertaking a project such as this we need to  consider some limitations Due to size time and cost the amount of information and depth of analysis is limited. We will also note that due to the wider acceptance of  the problem in the United States, this is where many of the scholars and researchers into this subject are based. The UK does have some literature on the subject, but  it is more limited. The paper is also limited in terms of the sources of information. Secondary sources only are used, these are form a variety of printed sources including  journal,, periodicals and books, where possible information has been cross referenced to ensure correctness. Information has also been obtained in a manner to ensure it is as up to  date as possible. With all of these limitation in mind the paper aims to give a balanced and unbiased opinion of the situation and a balanced discussion. II. Literature  Review The first step in any project such as this is to define what we mean by digital divide. Here there appears to be a general consensus. The term  appears to have arisen in 1996 during a debate in America on the Telecommunication Act of 1996 (Feldman, 2000). In general terms the divide is usually perceived between those who
