the practice of outsourcing is able to save costs and to increase service levels. Outsourcing is defined as the transfer of a function or task to an external provider which  was previously provided in-house. This is a broad area of study. It is noted that there have been many studies in the past that have looked at one of  both of these issues. However, in most cases these studies have been limited to the micro environment, taking place on a small scale. The author is looking at assessing the  impact on terms of potential cost saving and service improvement on the macro level. It is notable that in the literature review, and some of the studies which looked at  the issue in the micro level, it was recognised that there was a lack of empirical evidence on this subject. The information for dissertation has come from a wide  range of sources looking at relevant aspects, such as different classifications of privatization, of which outsourcing it one of many subsets. The data that is used in the analysis comes  from forty different studies which were identified as a part of this literature review and used in a meta analysis. Meta analysis can be a very useful tool, it is  a way in which correlated results and results from many different research studies may be correlated to give an overview of the subject being studies. One of the major suppositions  of meta analysis is that each different study used in the analysis may give a divergent perspective on the relationship in the chosen population. If the meta analysis looked  at a wide range of firms and industries there would be the danger of potential dilution of specific results due to divergences that may be present in the different areas
