Dow Corning is currently operating under bankruptcy protection due to the thousands of lawsuits brought against the company alleging the silicone-gel breast implants made women sick  (Partheymuller, 2004). Despite the legal troubles, Dow Corning is a stable company, as the following SWOT will demonstrate. Strengths: * Recognition. The company is consistently recognized as outstanding. For instance,  Dow Corning received the CIO 20/20 Vision Award, the Sustained Excellence Award and the National Medal of Technology in 2002; it received CIO-100 award for three consecutive years, 2000-2002  (Tandon et al, 2003). * Leadership demonstrated by receiving the John J. McCloy Leadership Award in 2002 (Tandon et al, 2003). * Strong R&D leading to innovative solutions. * Diversified  with more than 7,000 products and services being offered in markets from personal care to automotive and electronics (Global Cosmetic Industry, 2003). * Continues to expand. Formed a new business,  Dow Corning Compound Semiconductor Solutions, to provide products and services to the "wide band gap semiconductor industry" in 2003 (Ceramic Industry, 2003). * Technology. On the cutting edge as  a result of their own R&D and from the acquisition of other companies (Ceramic Industry, 2003). For instance, the company launched a new Photonics business (Fiber Optics Weekly Update, 2003).  * Recently launched the External Equipment Provider Alliance, which is an alliance with 9 companies in the electronics assembly and packaging industry. Purpose of this alliance is to help customers  improve productivity and lower costs by streamlining handling and packaging (PR Newswire, 2004). This alliance is only one part of program that is intended to "create and deliver customized business  solutions that help customers throughout the electronics industry address materials, process and integration challenges" (PR Newswire, 2004).
