    fundamental reason for using childrens literature in early childhood education. Children love stories! They remember stories. They invent their own stories. They ask for the same stories to be told  to them over and over. Childrens literature is an important component in a childs education because it allows him or her to experience the magic, power, and pleasure of language.  It also offers a new window on the world when it is used to tell the stories of other people, different places, historical events, and much more. Part of the  great benefit of childrens literature is that it is, obviously, written for children which means that it tells about all of these places, people, and events in language designed for  their level of comprehension. Childrens Literature in the Classroom Jacqueline Harris (1998) says that she is "always looking for childrens literature to make and enrich connections to the elementary  school curriculum" (pp. 510). Harris teaches teachers in Toronto about mathematics for children from kindergarten to sixth grade. She points out that "books and stories that use mathematical problem solving  not only engage children in the narrative but also give them opportunities to see how mathematics is used in everyday life" (pp. 510). Another example would be that in  many circumstances, history is easier to learn, understand, and remember if a reader feels a connection to a particular character or story. Creating such a connection is often best accomplished  through the use of historical fiction. Whos to say whether or not a certain character existed in a particular period of time but it allows a reader to "see" events  through the eyes of a Civil War soldier, a hopeful prospector of the California gold rush, or a young "schoolmarm" on the prairie.
