Technology has changed the way in which business operates, there is a great deal more potential in terms of efficiency that should work its way through the value chain to
create cost savings and increased productivity. The desire of business to increase efficiency has been driven by market conditions, such as increased global competition, as well as shareholder demands, looking
for inversed returns from their investments. At the same time the tools used to gain customer loyalty and make more sales are also becoming increasingly complex and require investment in
time and resources to gain a competitive advantage. These competing pressures need to be balanced and strategies that will allow both goals to be reached. One tool that has
been used is that of MRP but with recent development the use of ERP is becoming more popular. ERP, or Enterprise Resource Planning, can be defined as; "An industry
term for the broad set of activities supported by application software that helps a manufacturer or other business manage the important parts of its business, including product planning, parts purchasing,
maintaining inventories, interacting with suppliers, providing customer service, and tracking orders. ERP systems provide an opportunity to support the integration of HSE activities into the business" (HSE, 2005) This
