using this paper properly Introduction According to EUROPA (2001), the internet connection for the European Union, the institutional system constructed for this organization is one of a kind.  By its own definition it operates on a "three pillar" construction composed of intergovernmental and supranational elements. This discussion will examine the institutional system of the European Union, as  well as the tensions, which normally occur in this complex entity. History According to the Law Library of Duke University, which stores primary and secondary documents of the European Union  (2001), the EU really had its roots in the decisions which were made at the end of World War II, however did not officially come into existence until November  1993 after the ratification of the Maastricht Treaty Original members were Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and West Germany. Denmark, Ireland  and the United Kingdom joined in 1973. Greece became a member in 1981, and Portugal and Spain joined in 1986. Austria, Finland, and Sweden became members on January 1, 1995.  Perceived goals of the organization at that time were the development of a singular currency and the dissolution of border regulations concerning transport of goods. Supranational By definition, "supranational"  applies to those issues, which would transcend national boundaries, authorities, or interests. In the larger picture we could say that the European Union is an acknowledgment or recognition,  that there are some issues, which would transcend national boundaries. This is quite a step for those countries, which historically have warred with one another, and beat the drum  of national pride, long and loud.
