The firm have come through a difficult period, where there was a relatively late take  up of digital technology, which posed a threat to the firms continuance, but today the firm has survived, but still needs to carry on developing in order to compete in  the changed environment. The firm still has difficult time ahead and it is necessary to look at some potential strategic alternatives that may be adopted along side the existing strategies.  When determining strategy it is necessary to look at the strengths and core competencies of the company, in order to assess the way in which these may be leveraged, as  well as looking at the opportunities that exist within the market. It is also necessary to look at the weaknesses within the organization, which may need to be strengthened, minimized,  and threats which may impact on the organization. Kodak have a number of strengths in their favor, the brand name has been established with a high level of market recognition  and an association with high quality photographic, and related, equipment. The organization has strong market presence, and strong distribution channels, which it was able to successfully leverage despite its late  entry into the digital camera market (Thompson, 2007). The company has been able to make the transition relatively quickly, which also indicates the strength; the ability to undertake a change  in an effective and rapid manner. The firm has been served well by its own research and development team, for example in 2003 along with more than 600 PhDs employed  and 748 patents successful register in the US there is a high potential for development if the research and development process can be enhanced to increase pace and reduce the
