Jean Bethke Elshtain and Cornel West are two of the worlds most respected writers. Both of these writers address the problems of individualism in our contemporary
society. While Wests "Race Matters" makes a frontal attack on these problems, even to the point of inciting societal upheaval, Elshtains "Democracy on Trial" envisions citizens working within the
existing system to effect change. Each of these authors of course recognizes the importance of the relationship between the individual and community in ensuring the future of civil society,
