mean that a pregnant woman who consumes alcohol will certainly pass this syndrome onto her unborn child, but the possibility does exist. In fact, the experts often disagree as  to the amount of alcohol which is necessary to produce FAS in a child. While studies do vary in their results, the final analysis is that no one is  absolutely sure. Therefore, there is no safe amount of alcohol which can be consumed during a pregnancy. The good news  about fetal alcohol syndrome is that it is completely avoidable (What is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome? 2002). There is no reason for any baby to ever suffer with this dreaded  syndrome with its lifelong effects (What is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome? 2002). In fact, it could be considered child abuse when a pregnant woman drinks alcohol because of the real  damage she could be doing to her unborn child. The effects of FAS will then follow that child for life and impair that childs life in a drastic way.  The bad news is that despite the preponderance of evidence, many women continue to drink while they are pregnant (What is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome? 2002). This does not  necessarily mean that they drink in excess, simply that they drink at all - which is enough to produce the syndrome (What is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome? 2002).  Of course, the possibility does exist that some women simply do not know about FAS or how to avoid it. But, in recent  years there has been an overwhelming amount of advertising done on this subject and numerous awareness campaigns have been waged in order to educate the public in general as well
