    answer of new. In fact, they would only be half right, as in fact, modernism as it applied to art during the 1870-1970s has been considered new compared to the  classical forebears. However, where the terminology departs from the average mans answer, is in the complex study of a group of artists, their message and their new type of art:  modernism. Given that modernism is speaking about a work of art, then one has to state, obviously, that this type of artwork was primarily concerned with the quality of  color, perhaps moreso, than subject matter. For example, Manet, would be a great example of some of the earliest forays into this movement. Notice in his Le Dejeuner Sur Lherbe  the element of color, spatial relationships and light values. Of course, this begs the question, does it not? What made painters become modern painters? Why didnt they stick to what  was popular, commissioned, and desired? The answer has to lay in the fact that previous art forms had ceased to offer the freedom of expression that the newer artists longed  for. As newer philosophies of thought and newer innovations in science began to pervade the human experience, the art, it can be said, changed to reflect this. Edouard Manet  painted some of the most widely admired, critically discovered, and revered paintings of the nineteenth century. It can be said that his unconventional way of perceiving things had an impact  on the art world and on future generations of artists. His paintings seem to hint at the fact that consciousness itself is the greatest subject of his art. This can  be readily seen by a comparison of Manets Olympia painting, with the stylings of coutlures Romans of the Decadence and Courbets Demoiselles des bords de la Seine(Manet, 2002).
