    Tracy Gregory, For - June 2001 -- properly! Mexican Americans have been, for too long,  ignored as significant participants in American history. In fact, it is impossible to chronicle the history of Texas without considering the crucial contributions of Mexican Americans. A trio  of historians/college professors decided to change that. In the spring of 1991, the state of Texas hosted a conference entitled "Mexican Americans in Texas History," which featured among its  some 600 notable scholars Dr. Emilio Zamora, Dr. Cynthia Orozco and Dr. Rodolfo Rocha. The tremendous success of this conference revealed not only an intense interest in Mexican-American history,  but imbued Zamora, Orozco and Rocha with a sense of purpose. They would right a terrible wrong which had gone uncorrected in Texas history for too many years; they  would collaborate on an expansive historical text which would detail the participation of Mexican Americans since 1836, the year Texas secured its independence from Mexico. The result was the  exceptional volume, Mexican Americans in Texas History, published by the Texas State Historical Association in 2000. It is a collection of eleven essays written by the foremost experts in  their respective fields of historical inquiry. The fact that each essay was written by academic experts is no coincidence. The authors purpose was to provide a scholarly text  which could be taught in college classrooms on a subject where in-depth research and analysis were practically nonexistent, as well as a painstakingly detailed historical record. The theme of Mexican  Americans in Texas History is, quite simply, how Mexican Americans since 1836 managed to make major contributions despite Anglo prejudice and ethnic oppression, and how these achievements were often inspired
