    The hypothetical situation is based on the Northlake ethics case (Centre for Accounting Ethics, n.d.). John has been with the Amalgamated Forest Products for eight years, having begun  as an accountant and who was now manager of corporate reporting. John happened to see a report entitled: Endangered Species - Prepared for the Legislative Committee, which had been  prepared and written by Jane, the manager of the financial analysis department. The report was to be given orally to a legislative committee by Harvey, the president and the CEO  of the company. The committee was debating the probably enactment of a new environmental protection law regarding the dumping of chemicals in the large lake outside of the small town  in which the plant was located. The new legislation would require the company to construct a new lagoon for the treatment of waste water. John found the report contained "facts  and figures" regarding the cost of the lagoon was highly inflated, the estimated revenues were severely deflated and the report even said the company might be forced into bankruptcy. Since  the plant was the major employer in this small town, nobody wanted to plant to close. John was expected to sign off on the report. John went immediately to Wally,  his boss with whom he had a good relationship, and told Wally he could not sign off on the report and, in fact, he would take his information public if  the report was not changed because the figures were pure fiction. Wally became enraged and reminded John about all the things he, Wally, and the company had done for John  and his family over the years. He accused John of not being a team player and told him to think seriously about what he was doing and if it was
