This particular population has additional issues and concerns which must be  addressed in order for substance abuse counseling to be effective. Quite often, the substance abuse is the result of issues related to their sexual status being left unresolved, and  clearly then this highlights the need to address the entirety of the person rather than solely their substance abuse issue.  In terms of prevention, there are again specific issues which need to be addressed when dealing with sexual minority populations. Without acknowledging this aspect, the counselor fails to recognize  a significant part of who these individuals are as well as an important factor in the substance abuse issue. Substance Abuse Counseling for Sexual Minorities  "Substance abuse is a critical problem in the United States across all segments of the population and impacts in some way all members of our  society" (Substance Abuse and Counseling: A Perspective, 2002). Substance abuse is actually defined as the active use and/or dependency on any mood-altering substance (Substance Abuse and Counseling: A  Perspective, 2002). These substances can include alcohol, sedatives, amphetamines, cannabis, cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, caffeine, nicotine, and prescription drugs, as well as legal drugs (Substance Abuse and Counseling: A Perspective,  2002). Addictive behavior is characterized when a person is preoccupied with a substance and experiences withdrawal symptoms if they do  not have the opportunity to use that substance (Substance Abuse and Counseling: A Perspective, 2002). Sexual minorities, such as gays and lesbians, face additional issues in terms of substance
