    entitled "Power is the Main Motivator." In it, authors argue that perhaps the type of leadership exhibited in the business world dictates whether or not the employees will be motivated.  Motivation is an important factor in the scheme of things but McClelland & Burnham (1976) did create a stir with these ideas that were revolutionary at the time. The ideas  are not very different from concepts to come from the mainstream nor are they antiquated by todays standards. Authors do provide food for thought, but it is also important to  incorporate other ideas in order to come to conclusions about just what motivates employees. In the field of psychology, motivation is also somewhat enigmatic. There had been experiments such as  the well known one where Pavlov realizes that dogs would salivate whenever a bell would be heard. In some way, the mindless reaction of the body seemed to attach itself  to a certain sound. It seemed like motivation, but truthfully it was an almost automatic response. In many ways, people do go through their daily work situations on automatic pilot.  Business articles often address issues of motivation and how managers can probe deeper into the psyche of their employees. In examining the article by McClelland & Burnham (1976) as well  as other pieces of information, it does appear that coming to a conclusion about motivation is not impossible. Still, while tips in respect to motivating employees are plentiful, motivation is  a deep subject that includes many possibilities. II. Power as Motivation: The views of McClelland and Burnham In the article entitled "Power is the  Main Motivator," originally published in the mid-1990s, authors McClelland & Burnham (1976) discuss three types of managers.
